Andrea Boyd’s exciting career is quite literally out of this world.
After being inspired to enter engineering after getting hooked on Star Trek: Voyager, Mechatronic Engineering graduate Andrea Boyd has now worked in 50 countries and is the only Australian working in the International Space Station Flight Control team in Europe. “I’m Eurocom, voicing up a uniquely Australian accent to the astronauts while engineering everything to go smoothly in space”, she says.
What Andrea loves most about her job is the incredible group of people she works with every day. “I get to work with European, American, Japanese and Russian astronauts and cosmonauts – such a fun diverse mix and all the crew are amazing.” Then at the Astronaut Centre, Andrea works with Astronaut Trainers, Spacewalk Trainers, Flight Surgeons, Biomedical Engineers, Space Exercise Specialists and Astronauts who all switch between multiple languages. “I’m in awe of my colleagues”, says Andrea.
Andrea is passionate about encouraging young Australians to pursue ambitious careers. She started the Aerospace Futures conference in Australia, and was on the 2015 Australian of the Year Honour Roll for her volunteer work at schools, universities and NGOs inspiring young people.
